What is Montessori exactly? And how would I bring it home?

Well, its based on the ideas and teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori who developed the approach over 100 years ago! Most people associate the term “Montessori” as being a preschool curriculum or an education approach to use with young children. And while that can be true - it’s so much more!

Montessori principles can be extended into many different areas of everyday living in school, home or in the community. It creates a way of living that supports people of all ages working together in a peaceful, mutually supportive environment.

Key Montessori Principles:

  1. Be Consistent

  2. Practice Mutual Respect

  3. Recognize Uniqueness

  4. Foster a Sense of Order

  5. Encourage Rather than Praise

  6. Instill Intrinsic Motivation

  7. Give Freedom within Limits

  8. Support Lifelong Learning

  9. Build Autonomy

  10. Promote Grace and Courtesy

  11. Instill Personal Responsibility

So how do you do this in the summer when your away from school and away from routine?

Take these principles of Montessori and make it a way of life in your home this summer!

It starts with a mindset shift… which you may have already started this shift in your parenting journey or this may just be the beginning. Either way - right now is the perfect time to start.

Start with these simple steps:

  • Create a daily structure (schedule, routine or rhythm).

  • Challenge yourself daily to see the world through the eyes of your child.

  • Respect the thoughts and feelings of those around you - your partner, your family and your children (no matter their age)

  • Create intentional space to support independence and order

  • View behavior as communication

  • Be present for others
